Creators Beat Consumers

Consuming other people's marketing feels like progress. It is not. It is watching. The businesses that get known create.

Creators Beat Consumers

I have been thinking about the difference between consuming and creating.

It is easy to fall into consumption. Scrolling, watching, taking things in. No effort required, and there is no shortage of things to look at. You can lose hours without noticing. I catch myself doing it too.

Then I watched one of my kids actually build something for YouTube instead of just watching it. Taking an idea, figuring out how she wanted it to look, experimenting, adding her own touch. It was not perfect, but that was not the point. She was in it. And it made me realize how big that gap is. The distance between consuming and creating is not really about skill or tools. It is just the decision to move from watching something to trying it yourself.

Every business lives on the wrong side of that line more than it should. Owners consume marketing all day. They watch competitors, save posts, read about the tactic everyone is using, admire the brand that is everywhere. And it stops there. Consuming other people's content feels like progress. It is not. It is watching.

The businesses that get known are the ones that create. They post the imperfect video. They write the plain email to their list. They put out the before-and-after, the tip, the story from the shop. Not because it is polished, but because they crossed the line from taking things in to putting something out. And with AI, the excuse for staying on the consuming side is gone. The tools remove almost all of the friction that used to keep you from making something.

There is nothing wrong with consuming. That is where you get ideas and find things that inspire you. But if it stops there, it does not go anywhere. The part that sticks is when you take the next step. When you make something and put a little bit of yourself into it.

It does not have to be big. One post. One video. One email that only your business could send. Stop studying everyone else's marketing and publish something of your own this week. Creators get remembered. Consumers just scroll.
