Garbage In, Garbage Out: Why AI Feels Generic Until You Feed It Your Business

Garbage In, Garbage Out: Why AI Feels Generic Until You Feed It Your Business

I learned early that with AI, input equals output.

I still run into people who are skeptical. They think it replaces jobs, or that whatever you make with it is not real. I get it. The analogy that lands for me is carpenters. A carpenter built tables with hand tools, and then power tools showed up. Is the carpenter who uses power tools suddenly less real. Are his tables worth less because he used better tools. Is the one who refuses help more honorable because it took him longer. I do not think so. AI is a tool. It amplifies whatever you bring to it.

Here is the part that matters for a business. Most people show up to AI with one sentence and expect magic. Then it hands back something generic, and they decide the tool is overhyped. The problem was not the tool. It was the input. You gave it nothing about your business, so it answered like it had never heard of you.

The shift for me was building what I think of as a digital twin of the work. Most of us are walking around with a hundred projects, customers, prices, and half-formed plans in our heads. If you want AI to be useful, you have to get that out of your head and into something it can read. So I started dumping everything. At work, I organized the key projects, the standard operating procedures, and the notes into structured files. You can do the same for a business. Your services and pricing. Your ideal customer. Your process from first call to finished job. The questions people always ask. Your brand voice.

When you load that in, the answers stop being generic. Now when I ask for help I get real problem solving. Tailored brainstorming. Specific next steps that fit the actual business instead of a made-up one.

The tool did not replace the thinking. It sharpened it.

If AI has felt underwhelming for your company, do not start with a better prompt. Start with better input. Spend one hour writing down the things about your business that are trapped in your head, and feed that in first. Everything downstream gets better, because you finally gave it something real to work from.
